GLOBAL_GT:
The Global Movement for Geothermal Energy

Welcome to GLOBAL_GT, a dynamic 12-month campaign uniting geothermal communities around the world. From June 2025 to May 2026, we’re spotlighting geothermal innovation, impact, and leadership across 12 distinct regions — culminating in a landmark gathering at the World Geothermal Congress 2026 in Calgary.

Join us as we share stories from the ground up — projects, people, policy, and technology — that demonstrate how geothermal energy delivers clean, reliable power and sustainable solutions worldwide.

July 2025

MESSAGE OF THE MONTH JULY:

Africa Is Rising: The Geothermal Moment Is Now

Geothermal is not new to the African continent. In fact, it is the home of the world’s first. Utilised to power the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kiabukwa mine between 1952 and 1960, the 250 kW operation is even older than Wairakei!

Fast forward to today and East Africa is the Geothermal Powerhouse of the continent

East Africa stands at the epicentre of Africa’s geothermal revolution. Kenya leads the charge with an impressive 1 GW of installed geothermal capacity—nearly half of the country’s electricity mix—powered by world-class projects like Olkaria V, Olkaria VI, and Menengai. This makes Kenya not just a continental leader, but a global success story in clean baseload energy.

June 2025

MESSAGE OF THE MONTH:

June | Canada & Northern America

From Yukon to Yellowstone, from Alberta to Arizona — the geothermal story of Northern America is being rewritten.

From Yukon to Yellowstone, from Alberta to Arizona — the geothermal story of Northern America is being rewritten.

North America is home to about 4 GW of installed geothermal electricity capacity — with the United States leading the world, and Canada on the rise with its first commercial geothermal power plant in Saskatchewan almost online.

But it’s not just about electricity.

POLICY SPOTLIGHT JUNE 2025:

Canada’s Regulatory Moment: Making Geothermal Work Across Provinces

Why the Cascade Institute’s Groundwork Report could help unlock Canada’s geothermal future.

Canada has the heat. It has the tech. It even has the capital. But geothermal in Canada remains stuck in the starting blocks—not because of geology, but because of unstructured regulation.

That’s where the Cascade Institute’s recent Groundwork Report: Regulatory Guidelines for Making Canada a Geothermal Powerhouse comes in. Released today on June 18th – 2025, this landmark document offers a long-overdue roadmap to fix Canada’s fragmented policy landscape.

TECH TALK JUNE 2025:

Real-time insights. Real-world impact.

What happens when geophysics, software, and bold thinking come together? You get geothermal breakthroughs that rewrite what’s possible — from volcanic eruptions to wastewater reuse.

In our latest #GLOBAL_GT TechTalk, we sit down with Samantha Sellars, Geophysicist and Account Executive at Seequent, to explore how tools like Leapfrog Energy are helping geothermal leaders such as Ormat and Calpine overcome operational uncertainty, reduce risk, and accelerate innovation.

Discover how:

  • Ormat restarted Puna post-eruption using real-time subsurface models
  • Calpine injects 13 million gallons of treated water daily at The Geysers
  • Integrated 3D modelling is redefining project timelines and well design

As Samantha puts it:
“We’re not just modeling the subsurface — we’re unlocking its full potential in real time.”

THE PEOPLE JUNE 2025:

The People Behind the Power: Lynette Liston

As part of our June focus on Canada and North America, we’re proud to feature Lynette Liston in our “GLOBAL_GT: The People” series.

Lynette is the Geoscience Team Lead at Eavor, a next-generation geothermal technology company, working hard to innovate, scale up, and make geothermal accessible everywhere. She has worked in the energy sector for over 20 years developing skills as a technical geologist, team leader, and senior analyst. She is passionate about realizing energy security and energy independence for regions around the world.

GLOBAL_GT JUNE 2025:

North America Wrap-Up

As we close out a vibrant month focused on geothermal in North America, we’re grateful for the voices that carried this campaign — from cutting-edge developers to Indigenous leaders like those behind Tu Deh Kah Geothermal, who are showing the world what energy sovereignty truly looks like.

Policy watch: While the Senate’s “Big Beautiful Bill” dealt a blow to many renewables, geothermal made it through.

Key tax credits for geothermal, hydrogen, nuclear, hydropower, and carbon capture were retained — a crucial signal for the sector.

Why This Matters for Geothermal:

  • Bipartisan recognition: Geothermal is seen as clean, firm, and foundational.
  • Momentum preserved: Projects already in motion can stay on track under current IRA timelines.
  • Safe harbor status: In uncertain policy waters, geothermal stands out as a resilient, future-proof solution.

How to Get Involved

We want your stories! Whether you’re a developer, policymaker, researcher, or geothermal enthusiast:
GLOBAL_GT is your platform to shine a light on your work and community.

In the Field

Share photos and stories from geothermal projects or sites — from drilling rigs and power plants to the landscapes and people behind them.

The People

Tell us about yourself or someone inspiring in geothermal — through a short video, photos, and a personal story.

Why GLOBAL_GT matters

As the world races towards a cleaner energy future, geothermal remains a powerful but often under-recognized player. GLOBAL_GT bridges regional action with global impact — accelerating awareness, investment, and collaboration to unlock geothermal’s full potential.
