GLOBAL_GT AUGUST FOCUS:

Islands & Remote Regions

Affordability. Energy Security. Small Land –
Big Impact.

In August, our GLOBAL_GT campaign shines a spotlight on islands and remote regions – places where geothermal is more than just energy; it’s a pathway to resilience.

On islands, every square meter counts. With limited land and high energy costs, geothermal’s ability to deliver firm, affordable megawatts per land unit is game-changing. Beyond power, it supports sustainable tourism and local supply chains, shaping a future where energy security and sustainable living go hand in hand.

POLICY SPOTLIGHT:

Geothermal Energy – Strengthening Island Security in the Caribbean

In a region where imported fossil fuels dominate electricity generation, energy insecurity is more than just an economic challenge — it’s a strategic risk.

The Caribbean’s reliance on fuel imports leaves island nations vulnerable to volatile prices, supply chain disruptions, and climate-driven disasters.
Geothermal energy offers a transformative solution.
Beneath the volcanic landscapes of islands such as Dominica, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, and Montserrat lies an untapped resource capable of delivering 24/7, climate-resilient baseload power.

TECH TALK:

From Aotearoa to the Islands: How geothermal is powering resilience in remote regions

Jeremy O’Brien, Segment Director for Energy at Seequent, advocates for forward-looking technological solutions that drive the advancement of geothermal projects globally. His expertise bridges technical innovation and practical impact, making him a valuable voice in the energy industry.

In August, the GLOBAL_GT campaign turns to Islands and Remote Regions: places where land is limited, energy prices are high, and resilience is essential. These are environments where geothermal energy can be transformative, and few countries demonstrate this better than New Zealand.

WORKSHOP:

Firm Power, Flexible Futures: How Geothermal Can Strengthen Island Energy Systems

Island nations face a distinct energy paradox: they are rich in renewable potential yet structurally dependent on imported fossil fuels.

This reliance creates exposure to extreme price volatility, supply insecurity, and economic fragility. In many cases, electricity prices exceed €200–350/MWh, and imported fuels account for 60–100% of primary energy use. At the same time, climate vulnerability and rising tourism are placing additional pressure on land, infrastructure, and water systems. Most islands do not have the luxury of space for large-scale solar arrays, battery fields, or sprawling desalination plants. What they need is firm, compact, climate-resilient power — and this is where geothermal energy offers a compelling solution.

WRAP-UP

Islands & Remote Regions: Affordability. Energy Security. Small Land. Big Impact

This month, GLOBAL_GT spotlighted islands and remote regions – settings where every square meter matters, and energy resilience is both essential and achievable.

Key Takeaways:

  • Geographic constraints make geothermal uniquely appropriate for islands.

  • Success requires technical excellence, policy innovation, and strategic financing.

  • Inspiration and innovation—from New Zealand’s tech to Caribbean potential—are converging this August.

  • Our upcoming workshop aims to turn this potential into action.

July 2025

MESSAGE OF THE MONTH JULY:

Africa Is Rising: The Geothermal Moment Is Now

Geothermal is not new to the African continent. In fact, it is the home of the world’s first. Utilised to power the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Kiabukwa mine between 1952 and 1960, the 250 kW operation is even older than Wairakei!

Fast forward to today and East Africa is the Geothermal Powerhouse of the continent

East Africa stands at the epicentre of Africa’s geothermal revolution. Kenya leads the charge with an impressive 1 GW of installed geothermal capacity—nearly half of the country’s electricity mix—powered by world-class projects like Olkaria V, Olkaria VI, and Menengai. This makes Kenya not just a continental leader, but a global success story in clean baseload energy.

TECH TALK JULY:

It’s Tech Talk Time – and this July,it´s Africa!

This month’s GLOBAL_GT Tech Talk spotlights how Seequent is advancing geothermal energy across Africa one 3D model at a time.

From unlocking Kenya’s Olkaria and Menengai fields to pioneering early-stage exploration in the Barrier Volcanic Complex and national-scale mapping in Botswana and beyond, Seequent’s tools like Leapfrog Energy and Oasis montaj are transforming how we see, model, and manage the subsurface.

Meet Ollie Ward and dive into Seequent’s role in reshaping Africa’s geothermal frontier in this month’s feature.

AFRICA’S HOT ROCKS:

Mining and Geothermal Power – Natural Allies

Africa is uniquely positioned in the global energy transition with vast critical mineral reserves and world-class geothermal potential.

As demand for lithium, copper, cobalt, and rare earths rises, so does the pressure to mine more sustainably. Powering these operations with clean, local, baseload energy is not just a climate imperative it’s a strategic advantage.

Geothermal energy offers mining companies in Africa:
🏔️ Lower emissions through carbon-free electricity and heat
🌱 Cost stability in energy-intensive operations
🕛 On-site heat applications for mineral processing
🔥 Energy security in remote or off-grid regions

AFRICA’S HOT ROCKS:

Geothermal in North Africa: Highlights and Insights

When people think of North Africa, oil, gas, and solar power often come to mind. But as Meryem Redouane, our North African reporter, reveals in her latest article, the region is quietly unlocking another powerful resource beneath its surface: geothermal energy.

From Morocco’s coastal basins and volcanic sites, to Algeria’s 240+ thermal springs, Tunisia’s desert agriculture, and Egypt’s Red Sea rift zones – geothermal is moving from traditional hammams to modern solutions:
  greenhouse heating,
  aquaculture,
  balneotherapy,
  binary power, and even
  clean hydrogen production.

With geothermal now entering national strategies across the region, policy, investment, and partnerships will determine how fast this potential turns into projects. Read Meryem’s full insights here:
