Geothermal in Africa: Highlights and Insights from the July Edition
In July, GLOBAL_GT turned the lens on Africa, emphasizing that the continent has entered a geothermal moment. From the historic Kiabukwa mine in the DRC to Kenya’s 1 GW of geothermal power (nearly half its national electricity mix), East Africa is now a global leader in clean, reliable baseload power with the potential to reach 17 GW by 2045.

Tech Talk – 3D Geology at Work

We featured Seequent’s Leapfrog Energy and Oasis montaj in action: enabling 3D subsurface modelling across Kenya (Olkaria, Menengai), early-stage exploration at the Barrier Volcanic Complex, and national geological mapping programs in Botswana and beyond. This Tech Talk highlights how cutting-edge software is accelerating exploration, well targeting, and institutional capacity in African geothermal.

Africa’s Hot Rocks – Mining Meets Geothermal

This thought leadership piece illustrated how geothermal can power Africa’s critical minerals boom – lithium, cobalt, copper, rare earths – by providing low-carbon electricity and industrial heat right at mine sites. The message: sustainable extraction requires geothermal energy, not just solar or diesel.

North Africa on the Rise

Our reporter, Meryem Redouane, explored geothermal hotspots in Morocco (coastal basins / volcanic zones), over 240 thermal springs in Algeria, greenhouse heating and spa use in Tunisia, and emerging Rift‑zone prospects in Egypt. These regions are quietly moving toward policy activation and investment interest.

In August, our GLOBAL_GT campaign shines a spotlight on islands and remote regions – places where geothermal is more than just energy; it’s a pathway to resilience.
