IGSC

International Geothermal Standards Committee

Setting the Global Benchmark for Geothermal Excellence

About the IGSC

The International Geothermal Standards Committee (IGSC) is a global expert body established by the International Geothermal Association (IGA) in partnership with Sinopec, designed to develop internationally harmonised standards for the geothermal energy sector. These standards aim to strengthen confidence, enhance comparability, and unlock increased investment across geothermal markets worldwide.

ABOUT

Mission & Vision

The IGSC’s core mission is to:

  • Develop harmonised global standards that promote consistency, transparency, and reliability in geothermal project development and reporting.

  • Support industry scaling by aligning technical practices across regions and sectors.

  • Facilitate investment and market growth by improving comparability and confidence for investors, policymakers, and operators.

  • Advance geothermal’s contribution to the global energy transition by enabling best-in-class performance and sustainability practices.

Committee Members

IGSC members are selected as individual experts with demonstrated leadership and depth of experience in geothermal energy and related sectors.

2025–2027 Work Programme

The IGSC’s initial strategic work stream focuses on foundational and high-impact areas of standardisation. Key priority areas include:

  • Geothermal Energy Terminology (Glossary 1.0)
Launching at the World Geothermal Congress 2026 in Calgary, this glossary establishes a shared language for the industry.
  • Geothermal Resources Evaluation
Harmonised approaches for resource classification, assessment, sustainability performance and financial disclosure.
  • Ground Source Heat Pump Projects
Technical and environmental standards for shallow geothermal systems and geoexchange applications.
  • Geothermal Power Generation
Benchmarks for plant performance, lifecycle assessment, and efficiency metrics.
  • Geothermal Heating and Cooling Systems
Design, operational, and policy frameworks for district heating/cooling networks.

This phased work plan reflects a systematic development path from foundational definitions to comprehensive technical standards.

Engage with the IGSC

As the geothermal sector expands rapidly – think of it as the Energy Transition’s “secret weapon” – the IGSC provides avenues for experts, organisations, and stakeholders to engage with the standardisation process as it evolves. Subscription options, participation pathways, and updates are available through IGA membership and communication channels.
