From Aotearoa to the Islands: How geothermal is powering resilience in remote regions
Jeremy O’Brien, Segment Director for Energy at Seequent, advocates for forward-looking technological solutions that drive the advancement of geothermal projects globally. His expertise bridges technical innovation and practical impact, making him a valuable voice in the energy industry.

In August, the GLOBAL_GT campaign turns to Islands and Remote Regions: places where land is limited, energy prices are high, and resilience is essential. These are environments where geothermal energy can be transformative, and few countries demonstrate this better than New Zealand.

Aotearoa – the Māori name for New Zealand – stands as a leading example of how geothermal energy can help drive resilience in these regions. With geothermal now accounting for nearly 20% of its electricity supply, Aotearoa has built a strong, sustainable energy backbone through the intelligent use of its volcanic geology.

Projects like the new Tauhara Power Station near Taupō, in the North Island, are helping the country to decarbonise its energy generation and provide stable, affordable baseload power.

A recent article by our partner Seequent, titled “Geothermal’s Untapped Potential to Shape New Zealand’s Energy Sector,” explores this story in depth. With commentary by Jeremy O’Brien, the piece outlines how advanced subsurface modelling and integrated planning have made it possible to scale geothermal in a way that’s both technically sound and socially impactful.

What makes New Zealand’s experience relevant to our August theme is its direct applicability to other island nations: from the Pacific and Caribbean to remote regions in Africa or Southeast Asia. As many of these areas look to reduce diesel dependence and achieve energy independence, the lessons from Tauhara and beyond show that geothermal is a low-footprint, low-carbon solution. We’re proud to feature this work in our August Tech Talk, and we thank Seequent for their continued collaboration on promoting global geothermal leadership.
