Abstract Geothermal heat flows are important in a wide range of areas. During the last decade new modeling approaches have been developed. The results of numerical modeling of some geothermal fields caused by local volumetric distributions of sources in the Earth’s crust are presented in this paper. Inverse solutions defining the regions occupied by thermal sources when the heat flow on the Earth’s surface is known are also provided. This inverse problem is unstable, so special methods of regularization of the solution are offered.
