Geothermal resources are of importance to New Zaalsnd as tourisi attractions, as an energy source and have cultural slgnlficance to maori people. For some time there has been considerable dissatisfaction with the ray Seothermal resources have been managed. A polIcy review has Seen undartakan by a committee of offlcials wlth submisslons being received from the public. Pollclss for the management of New Zaaland's geothermaI resources are presentad including a resource management framework for the lmplemeniation of the policies. The policies are aimed at protecting particular geothermal fields, allocating the resource amongst users, ensuring safe and efficient use of geothermal anergy, providing forpub1Ic partlcipatlon. and where practlcable funding the management on a user pays Sasis. The Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967 will provide tho central role In geothermal resource allocation and management. The Gaothermal Energy kt 1953 provides for the safe and efficientuse of geothermal anergy and enables the recovery of rentals for the use of geothermal anergy. The Town and Country Piannlng Act 1977, Reserves Act 1977 and the Envi ronmenta I Protection and Enhancement procedures have supporting roles. |
