A simple empirical equation is used to approximate the rate of heat generation as a function of time for two types of nuclear spent fuel. This equation is utilized to determine the temperature rise around a wellbore filled with nuclear waste. It is assumed that (prior to placing the nuclear waste into wellbore) several insulating layers (casing) were used to protect the nuclear waste. An effective radius concept is introduced to evaluate the effect of casing's thermal resistance on temperature rise in the wellbore. |
