In Switzerland the R&D efforts in the past years led to significant achievements in direct uses of geothermal energy: areal density of borehole heat exchanger systems for decentral space heating is highest worldwide; novel solutions like combined heat extraction/storage, energy piles, tunnel water use are supported by govermental aid. The risk guarantee system for aquifer drilling >400m which terminates in 1997 led to some success (e.g. the first doublet system in Riehen/BS which will be extended into Germany) but also to a number of failures. After summarizing the present status of utilizing the indigenous resources the Swiss activities on the international geothermal scene are highlighted, including the banking of development projects for electricity generation. |
