Abstract The resources of geothermal energy in Ukraine were estimated for: 1. Thermal and superheated waters that are formed and circulate in permeable water-saturated horizons extending over the territories of 11 districts (oblasts) in the depth range from 1000 to 5000 metres; 2. Day impermeable rocks occurring at a depth of 1500-5000 metres and extending over the territories of 14 districts. The estimation results are as follows: 1. Predictable operational resources of thermal and superheated waters add up to 3 mln. cubic metres per day. Technically-accessible energy potential thereof is 33.12 mln. MWh/year (thermal) and 2.36 mln. MWh/year (elecrtical). 2. Technically-accessible energy potential of dry rocks adds up to 18.02 mln. MWh/year. The recruiting of the above-specified geothermal resources by the fuel and energy complex of Ukraine will make it possible to create 12390 MW and 414 MW of heat and electricity generating capacities respectively. Exploitations of these capacities will result in annual saving of 7.78 mln. tons of conditional fuel and reduction of CO2 emissions by 17 mln. tons/year.
