Abstract The geothermal prospects (geothermal fields) beneath the Beijing Plains Area are associated with unique (paleo-) basement aquifers of high permeability. The main aquifer appears to be coherent beneath the whole Beijing Graben where it can be found typically between 0.5 and 3.5 km depth over an area of the order of 2,200 km2. Abstraction of thermal water is controlled by a levy of the local government. At present a total of 10 Million cubic meter of thermal water is produced annually from all geothermal prospects in the Beijing Plains area. This volume is only replenished in part by deeper recharge. Re-injection is now being encouraged by applying the levy to the balance of produced and re-injected water. Bathing accounts for ~50% and space heating for 34% of the total annual production..
