Abstract The first geothermal exploration well is being drilled in Sanjiagang area, north side of Pudong International Airport in Shanghai. It has reached 2,100 m in depth. It can be expected to complete the well in designed depth of 2,300 m in this year. Stratigraphy shows that under rough 300 m Quaternary and huge thick Jurassic it will be Ordovician-Cambrian limestone. There is a long period of unconformity above the limestone. So the limestone aquifer is expected geothermal reservoir. When at the depth of 1,200 m, the well had met the first aquifer of basalt with 33 m3/h production rate at 35?C temperature.
Detailed geophysical survey has interpreted 5 anomaly areas, which was expected as geothermal area in Shanghai. They are in Sanjiagang, Beixinjing, Zhonggu Fengqi, Sunny Islet and Wujing areas. Geothermal will be used in health treatment, flower greenhouse, ornamental fish farming and so on.
