Abstract The Agricultural University of Athens started activities on geothermal energy applications in agriculture, at Lesvos Island in the year 1983. The Agricultural University of Athens in cooperation with the Institute of Geological and Mineral Research (IGME) and the Industrial Development Bank (ETVA), developed several demonstration activities in Nea Kessani (Xanthi), in Lesvos island, in Milos island and in Nissyros island. The main purpose of these activities were the development of technology for the use of geothermic fluids and the demonstration of the operation in such systems, to the local authorities and private farmers, in order to promote the use of geothermy as a tool for local socioeconomic development.
