Abstract This paper summarises the development of a model of a generic TVZ geothermal field which extends to a depth of over six kilometres. This is based on the large-scale TVZ model of Kissling and Weir (2005). The model is used to investigate the effects of production and reinjection from depths of down to 4.5 kilometres on the geothermal reservoir itself and the natural (pressure dependent) surface features. The modelling shows that deep production of a mass of fluid equal to the natural outflow (but not much greater) is sustainable for at least 50 years, provided that full reinjection occurs. Reinjection (either shallow or deep) is necessary to maintain the health of the natural surface features
