Abstract Estimates of the potential of geothermal energy to provide base load electricity for the US were developed in a comprehensive national assessment of US geothermal resources, technologies, and economics conducted during the period from September 2006 to 2007. Methodologies were employed using resource-scale geologic heat flow and bottomhole temperature measurements to develop detailed quantitative projections of the US EGS resource base. In addition, the amount of recoverable useful energy was estimated based on thermal hydraulic models of heat extraction. Drilling and reservoir stimulation technology were reviewed in the context of evaluating how close key elements of both technologies are to providing commercial rates of energy capture and production. Remaining technology needs with respect to drilling and completing wells, stimulating EGS reservoirs, and converting geothermal heat into electricity were evaluated. Economic modeling analysis was carried out by comparing levelized energy costs generated by DOE's GETEM model and a separate model MITEGS developed specifically for this study. Results for long-term projections of EGS in the US for supplying electricity and thermal energy are also evaluated in terms of sensitivities to capital costs for drilling, stimulation, power plant construction, as well as assumed financial factors, learning curve estimates, and uncertainties and risks.
