| Abstract | This paper describes the experience gained by ENEL in drilling directional geothermal wells over the last ten years. Besides describing the major problems that were faced and the technological improvements that were achieved, the paper illustrates two special applications of directional drilling technology: the realization of the horizontal well Lamarello and the forked well Padule 2. Further development of directional drilling to exploit deep geothermal horizons requires that the of this sector develop mud motors and MWD instruments suitable for extended use at high temperatures. |
