Abstract Previous geothermal energy investigations that began in the 1950s have highlighted the importance of the resource as a viable alternative source of energy in Uganda. Studies aimed at evaluating the geothermal potential areas have been undertaken to a limited extent to encourage the development of this sub-sector. However, development faces constraints that include the monopoly of hydropower in the energy sector. Yet measures have to be put in place to meet the future energy needs of the country that is being faced with a fast growing economy (average growth 6%/year for the last decade). A more serious attempt to articulate the strategic role geothermal energy research and development can play in the economic development of Uganda needs to begin now to enhance the development of the sub-sector.
