Magnetic steering provides real time surface readout of directional data (inclination, azimuth, and tool-face orientation) while drilling. Real time surface readout is accomplished through the uses of wireline. The tool can be used in high temperature and short radius wells. It measures several components of the earth S magnetic field for comparison to theoretical which makes it very applicable to drilling accurately placed geothermal wells. During the drilling of well 424D, the Super EYE tool, used for magnetic steering has helped improve drilling performance. Critical geological targets were hit at a considerably shorter time compared to traditional means of getting surveys. The utilization of the Super EYE tool was instrumental in drilling the top section of the well 424D approximately four days ahead of the planned schedule. This was done while avoiding faults very near to the surface and alleviated the need of building a new drilling pad. This translates to considerable savings in terms of rig time, and operational costs.
