Abstract To meet the rapidly increasing demand of electricity and in line with the National Energy Policy : Intensification, Diversification, Conservation, Indexation, Leads to accelerate, the development of geothermal energy resources in Indonesia. Government of Indonesia invites private participation through BOT or BOO Concepts, up to now I1 Power Purchase Agreement have been signed totally nearly 1990W, 4 Contract3 under Negotiation. It,sprojected that the installed capacity of geothermal energy by the year 2000 will be 1OOOMWand of 5000 MWat the end of PJPlI or 10% of itÆs potential. Strategy to cope with the requirement be based on the understanding that geothermal is renewable, clean and not exportable. The paper dealing with the resources potential, technology adapted as well as legal and environmental issues, private involvement and future programme facing the second long year development scheme.
