Abstract The results of a side-by-side tracer flow test sampling of geothermal wells using Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and SF6 as the steam-phase tracer indicate the two methods can be used interchangeably. Steam rates measured by the IPA tracer method were compared to the rates measured with the Sulfur Hexaflouride (SF6) tracer method using linear regression. SF6 and IPA tracers were used on 15 geothermal wells with steam rates ranging from 7-26 kg/sec. The slope of the regression line was not significantly different from 1 and the y-intercept was not significantly different from 0 indicating that there was no evidence for systematic differences between the results of the two methods. Random errors can account for the differences in steam rate calculations.
