Abstract New Zealand has used its high temperature geothermal resources to generate electricity for over 60 years, but more recently geothermal generators, Māori organizations and tribes and local communities have sought ways further capitalize on local geothermal assets and add greater value to their regions. This includes the direct use of geothermal energy for heating and cooling applications, such as space heating, industrial processing, horticulture, balneology and tourism (Blair et al, 2018). Taupō is a small town located in the center of the North Island of New Zealand nestled amongst high temperature geothermal reservoirs in the Taupō Volcanic Zone. Enterprise Great Lake Taupō supports economic development in the Taupō District. This paper will discuss the strategic approach of a small town in New Zealand to use its geothermal resources to growth the prosperity of its people. It will include examples of projects, lessons learnt, approach, strategy and future aspirations.
