Abstract Kawah ojang geothermal field occupies an Gandapura volcanic complex. The hydrothermall y active area covers a small area along the eastern side, and includes fumaroles and steam heated sulphate springs containing negligible chloride concentrations typically associated with a vapour dominated system. However, the initial nine wells drilled to 500-1500 m revealed the presence of a superficial layer of warm to hot sulphate water down to about 700 m, underlain by a low density fluid (0.085 consisting of sodium phate water of groundwater origin, into which neutral chloride water mixes locally up to undefined levels. presence of gas which rises continually through the system and lift s the chloride water from a widespread deeper 1ayer .
