Abstract Heat pipes are an important feature of models of vapor-dominated geothermal reservoirs. Numerical experiments reveal that a vapordominated heat pipe is unstable if pressure controlled at shallow levels. This instability is discussed in physical terms, and some implications for geothermal reservoirs are considered.
