Abstract For most of geothermal space heating systems in China, no peaking load is added and the utilization efficiency of geothermal energy is low. The purpose of our work is to probe the design and operation experience of geothermal space heating system with peaking load, to test the optimal heating design parameter model and to set up an exemplary geothermal space heating system with peaking equipment. The authors carried out some experiments on geothermal space heating with peaking load in the winter of 1987 in Tianjin University and obtained large number of experimental data. Experimental process and its results are described and the peaking principle is studied. In addition, the paper pointes out that the energy utilization efficiency of geothermal space heating system can be raised, and the heating area can be increased by using small proportion of peaking load.
