Abstract The Maori people have been a silent partner with regards to the Treaty of Waitangi, this silence is now being broken. The Maori are becoming more involved within matters that have the potential to impact upon their traditional lands and resources, their taonga; treasures. The geothermal resource is one such taonga. This paper examines some of the issues that have arisen as a result, of more active participation and awareness by Maori people towards their traditional taonga, the geothermal resource.
