Abstract In this contribution, a comparison between two models of geothermal reservoir is proposed. Both models are built using poroelastic beam finite elements, supplemented with a thermal degree of freedom. The first model is two dimensional and is based on an idealized cross section of the Soultz-sous-ForĂȘts reservoir. The second one is nothing but an extension of the latter in the third dimension. At first, we detail the governing THM equations of the model. We compare for similar physical configuration and dimensions of the model, 2D and 3D results where natural convection develops and show that dimensionality of the model is a sensitive parameter.
