Abstract Vein samples from the exploration for epithermal mineralisation are commonly subjected to multi-element analysis. Trace element geochemical response in such material is a recognisable characteristic of epithermal mineralisation, and provides a routine "fingerprinting" method. In this role, however, vein geochemistry should only complement, not be a substitute for, morphologic and textural observations. Vein geochemistry is not convincing as an indicatorof vertical zonation within a mineralised structure; alteration and fluid inclusion studies are more useful in such assessments.
