Abstract This paper discusses some key engineering decisions for Ohaaki, and seeks to show them as responses to a basic design brief. In all cases the operational requirements of the power generation system, and current and anticipated environmental constraints, had to be met with designs capable of handling the uncertainties and changeability that characterise all geothermal resources. Emphasis is laid on the role of engineering judgement in cases where there is rarely a uniquely correct solution.
