| Abstract |
The essay describes ways to search for geothermal myths and legends throughout history--and how to gather and use them. Some myths and legends not yet published are included, as are several others already in print. All are interesting and help answer the following questions. Question 1: Where can you find geothermal myths and legends? Briefly stated, myths and legends are found where they are believed and recounted--around geothermal sites. All facets of such places are involved, including volcanoes, eruptions, lava, hot springs, fumaroles, obsidian, volcanic rock, and earthquakes. Sometimes the myths and legends are recorded by people speaking with the locals in geothermal areas; sometimes they are found in first-hand accounts recorded and published by others; and sometimes they appear in fascinating engineering projects and in the arts, like literature, painting, sculpture, and music. Question 2: How do you interpret geothermal myths and legends? This is explained. Question 3: What use are geothermal myths and legends? There are at least two fine answers to consider in detail. Not only can myths and legends reveal priceless geological information, they reflect local beliefs and practices--important to anyone forming community relationships. Question 4: Where are geothermal myths and legends published? A bibliography is included. |
