Drilling and completion of wells is probably one of the highest capital expenditure, and represent the highest risk for geothermal industry today. The cost of a new well which can vary between 3 to 15 Million USD requires a high level of decision making process. The decision making process on spending high capital expenditure requires specialist from different disciplines such as Drilling Engineer, Geologist, Production Engineer and Reservoir Engineer, starting from planning, design, to execution phase. Many times, there are conflicts among the project team members as each discipline has their own interest, objective, and priority. The geologist usually is interested in getting as much as possible geological information. The reservoir engineer is interested in maximizing the production rate while drilling engineer usually wants to minimize the drilling risk and drilling time. Challenge in decision making is always on how to make compromise among project team members and to come up with the right decision. This paper will illustrate the project management process and methodology which Chevron Geothermal Indonesia is using for the well construction decision making process i.e. SW-CPDEP (Single Well – Chevron Project Development and Execution Process). This process consists of five continual phases and to be carried out by a multi-disciplinary project team. The implementation of the process has led to the success of 2012-2013 Salak Drilling Campaign. In drilling production wells, high permeable part of the reservoir has been penetrated which resulted in steam production as targeted. For the water injection wells, much better permeability has been encountered or created by hydraulic stimulation, which resulted in less wells to be drilled than originally planned. The geological and reservoir objectives have been met. The gained information also improves the understanding of the field and will be used for the future field development. In addition, a shorter project time, less incident, and cost saving of around 10 Million USD have been achieve |
