Abstract The scaling of silica colloids on the surface of a flat plate is numerically simulated using the software package PHOENICS. Emphasis is put on providing a link between the fluid flow and the scaling process. Formulations for the mechanisms leading to the deposition of silica are derived and the appropriate computer coding is added to PHOENICS. The influence of colloid size is investigated and the simulations predict the initial distribution of silica scale on the plate.
