The Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, University of Hawaiiat Manoa drilled three ScientificObservation Holes (SOH) December 1989andMay 1991 to assess and the geothermal resource potential alonga portion of the KilaueaEast Rift Zone comprised of rain forest, small farms,and scatteredresidences in several loosely organized communities,on the Big Island of Hawaii. Greatcarewas taken in selectingt he drilling sites,equipment,and procedures to minimizeimpacts to the environment,and to meet the stringentpermitting conditions. This paper discusses permittingc onditionsand describesthe methodsand techniquesused to successfully complete the Scientific Observation Hole (SOH) program. |
