Abstract Hydrogen Sulphide is often released into the atmosphere when deep geothermal fields are exploited for energy recovery. The oxidation products of are and both of which can cause environmental problems. The effect of emissions cannot be quantified however, because the rate of atmospheric oxidation is unknown. It was assumed that the oxidation would take place primarily in the aqueous phase in aerosols and therefore a laboratory apparatus was designed and built to study the rate of oxidation of in aerosols. For aerosols in the 5 - 25 range, the rate of oxidation in neutral to acidic was found to be less than the residence time in the apparatus.
