In 1993 several member countries of the South Pacific Applied Geoscience (SOPAC), requested a survey of regional geothemial potential. This request reflectsa growing interest in the countries of southwest Pacific to find reliable domestic energy resources could result in less dependence on imported fossil fiiels. With financial from the New Zealand government a report prepared for SOPAC by Geothermal Energy New Zealand Limited, (GENZL), on the resource data available and potential development of geothermal fields. report, published in June this year, includes a proposed exploration prograninie to complete pre studies in countries. This paper describes the findings of tlie report and on tlie potential uses of geothermal energy in the developing, countries of the SouthPacific. |
