Abstract Carbon steel and piping corrode at accelerated rates in the presence of superheated steam containing gas at The Geysers field. The observed corrosion is very similar to acid dew point corrosion observed in flue stacks of fossil fuel plants. A series of tests were conducted to cost effective materials for handling this corrosive steam. In general, Ni-Cr-Mo alloys and linings were immune to corrosion. developed in some stainless, duplex and Cr-Mo alloys. Corrosion is mitigated by caustic treatment and Ni alloy linings, or by operating wells and steamlines at superheated conditionsabove the acid dewpoint temperature.
