| Abstract | This paper will evaluate the current state of the art for the definition ofgeothermal resources in different geothermal environments and applications in Spain, showing the current findings and the forthcoming challenges. Spanish geothermal potential began to be investigated in the 1970’s by the Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) within the framework of the PEN (National Energy Plan) that tried to define alternative and local solutions to the 1970’s world energy crisis that was specially affecting to the Spanish economy due to the energy dependency from external sources. As a result of the preliminary studies undertaken by IGME including basic geology, geochemistry, geophysics and in some cases geothermal wells, several areas with relevant geothermal anomalies in both, island and mainland environment were defined. |
