| Abstract | The Miravalles geothermal power station in Costa Rica is described before and after the addition of Unit 5, a bottoming binary power plant. The early planning and design alternatives for Unit 5 are discussed. The bids and the selection criteria are presented. Details of the final design are presented. The unique asymmetrical piping layout is described. During its acceptance tests, Unit 5 demonstrated a net thermal efficiency in excess of 16%. |
