Abstract The geology and the results of electrical resisitivity studies carried out in the low-temperature Laias geothermal area in Ourense, Galicia, Spain, are discussed. The results of the resistivity surveys validate the interpretation of the subsurface geology in the area. The crystalline basement (non-altered granitic rocks; R=5000 ohm-m) is covered by Quaternary deposits (R=300-1000 ohm-m). Resistivity range of these sedimentary layers is reduced by the presence of geothermal fluids (hot water 51ÂșC) to 10-50 ohm-m. This study confirms that Vertical Electrical Soundings are appropriate to explore and characterize low-enthalpy geothermal systems located at relatively shallow depths.
