| Abstract | In Iceland special demands are placed on material quality for pipes used in plumbing systems due to the widely varying properties of the utilized soft cold water and the geothermal hot water used directly for heating and as tap water. The geologic and meteorological conditions in Iceland are considerably different than most neighbouring countries resulting in significantly different properties of potable water. Due to the great variety in chemical properties and wide temperature span, the performance of pipe materials differ considerably and selection of appropriate material is rather complicated. In the aim to reduce damage due to corrosion and scaling in piping systems, a program (www.lagnaval.is) open for use on the internet was constructed to assist constructors, plumbers and house owners to select appropriate pipe materials. Because of frequent damages in other applications than house installations, the goal for lagnaval.is will include information about all cold and hot water suppliers connected to more than four houses. The inclusion of information for industrial water systems at 80-120°C is also one of the goals as well as of outdoor distribution pipes. |
