Development of mathematical models for hydrothermal eruptions depends crucially on understanding transient boiling processes in porous media. Physical and numerical experiments are currently being carried out to investigate the progression of boiling fronts through porous media. Observations from a laboratory eruption support our conceptual model for hydrothermal eruptions. Observations from another laboratory experiment, a numerical experiment using a mathematical model based on conservation laws, and computer simulations are compared. While qualitative results for these models are similar, more investigationis needed to obtain quantitativeagreement. |
