Abstract A computer model has been used to investigate various options for disposal of separated water and power station condensate from the Wairakei-Tauhara system. In particular the effects of in-field reinjection are compared with those produced by alternative means of disposal. Our modelling results show that infield reinjection reduces the useful life of the resource and thus compromises its sustainability. This is an important result as the policies and regulations governing geothermal utilisation within the Waikato region of New Zealand, which covers the Wairakei-Tauhara geothermal system, are currently being reconsidered as part of a notified public process.
