Abstract Based upon the present condition of geothermal resources and drilling technology in Japan, the break even cost of producing electricity is 12.7/KWh at the bus bar. This cost is estimated for a 15 year operation of 5 injection wells and 11 production wells, HDR system producing 240 MW. The study was based on an HDR system covering a subterranean land area of 1,200 m by 1,800 m at a depth of 4,000 m, having an average temperature of 300 degrees C. A double flash system was assumed for the power station. 16 sites suitable for the HDR system have been located in Japan through an analysis of data made available by MITI.
