| Abstract | The crystallizer/clarifier process used at the Salton Sea produces silica sludge. Unocal has developed two patented processes to reduce heavy metal concentration in the silica sludge and to produce construction material used in levees for flood protection. Unocal has made process changes to reduce the heavy metals. These changes include; adding vessels, separating process streams and washing solids. Geocrete and Soil Geocrete are concrete products fabricated out of the silica sludge. These products have been extensively tested for constructability and environmental quality. Unocal used this material to improved road and levees to protect the existing Salton Sea development from flood inundation. |
