Abstract The assessment of geothermal resources in Western Europe is one of the main topics of the Commission's Geothermal Energy R and D Program. The characteristics of geothermal reservoirs in promising areas have been investigated over the past decade. Information on the depth, thickness, temperature, salinity and geology of the reservoirs was obtained. Syntheses of these data led to the evaluation of geothermal resources or of geothermal potential areas. The results were published in a Resources Atlas with data from the 12 EC Member States plus Austria and Switzerland presented on a common basis. Maps of European, national and regional scales are preceded by an explanatory text including the methodology applied for the assessment of the resources and the results obtained for each participating country.
