Abstract This paper summarizes the Project BOL/84/007 which became operative in late 1985 and is nearing completion. This project is being implemented in the framework of the United Nations and Italian cooperation and includes the following activities: detailed geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys; drilling of exploratory wells; well testing and production engineering; techno economic study of the field. The surveys led to the siting of five exploratory wells (for a total of 7150 meters) which were drilled in the most promising areas (Apacheta and Sol de Manana). Interference tests are being carried out in the area of Sol de Manana to evaluate the field. At the same time the study of the optimum field exploitation is under way. The preliminary conclusions appear to be favorable for the commercial exploitation of the resource.
