Abstract The geothermal field at Bakki in SW Iceland has been exploited for a hitaveita (municipal heating system) in the town of Thorlakshofn in the past eleven years. Two yeas ago chemical monitoring indicated beginning inflow of cold local groundwater into one of the two well shave have been drilled into the field. At that time no changes in wellhead temperature or pressure had been observed an downhole temperature loggings did not indicate any significant changes. No changes in temperature or pressure have occurred at wellhead since but the chemical changes or the water have continued. In February 1990 temperature logging in well HJ-01 showed that cooling of 5 to 6°C had occurring the deepest aquifers at the depth of 450 to 590 m. The uppermost aquifers were not affected however, an the other well, which is situated 180 m away, has not been affected.
