Despite being a power source with many desirable characteristics, geothermal has not been developed in the Pacific Northwest because of high cost, high risks, and the lack of a market for power. The region will require new power sources in the 1990s, and will need to know to what extent it can rely on geothermal. The Booneville Power Administration has developed a geothermal RD&D program which includes a proposal to award power contracts to three pilot projects in the Northwest. Public outreach efforts, environmental base line studies, and economic and land use impact studies will also be undertaken. two projects already under way are also discussed. |
