Abstract Heat and mass transfer in warm soil at Karapiti have been modelled using the TOUGH2 geothermal simulator. A range of van Genuchten parameters has been identified for modelling the unsaturated zone processes at this site, Shallow (0 - 20 cm) steady temperature and gas saturation for depth profiles are well matched. The propagation of the diurnal temperature wave into the soil has been successfully modelled, and this process has quantified heat and mass flows through the soil.
