Abstract The United States has used geothermal energy for the production of electricity since 1960 and has the largest installed capacity of any country in the world During the 1980s, expansion at The Geysers and emergence of the "hot water" segment of the industry fueled explosive growth in generating capacity. Geothermal development in the U.S. during the second half of the decade is reviewed, and development over the next five years is forecast.
