| Abstract | The Tasman Pulp and Paper Company's mill at Kawerau continues to be the dominant "direct" user geothermal energy in New Zealand. Recent plant changes have increase the effectiveness of the company's use of the resource. Other uses are relatively small in scale and include air and water heating for homes, motels and other commercial and industrial premises. Commercial swimming pool complexes and pools at hotels, motels and private homes are the other major direct users. Overall direct use of the resource has shown a slow increase during the last five years except at Rotorua where the enforced closure of bores has led to more than 70% reduction in use. |
