Abstract This study assesses a promising resource in central Utah as the potential site of a commercial hot dry rock (HDR) facility for generating electricity. The results indicated that, if the HDR reservoir productivity equals expectations based on preliminary results from research projects to date, a 50 MWe HDR power facility at Roosevelt Hot Springs could generate power at a cost competitive with new coal fired plants. However, the information presently available leaves considerable uncertainty about the expected reservoir performance. Testing that develops solid data concerning productivity and depletion rate is needed to design and adequately evaluate a potential commercial HDR project.
